Eileen Maybe because they were cousins.

Jennifer Schreiner I don't think that makes much sense either Eileen - they were not first cousins; they made it clear they were distant cousins and had no prior relationship growing up. I mean maybe it would raise an eyebrow or two, but beyond that...

Eileen My answer was to Jennifer about why was the pregnancy such a bad thing.

message 4: by Eileen (new)

Eileen If Ruth Ware had set this in the past, it could have been much better.

message 5: by Kaelene (new)

Kaelene He didn't kill her to hide the pregnancy. He killed her because she ran away and then came back demanding money.

Lourdes Kaelene, exactly.

message 7: by Tamro (new)

Tamro He killed her because he was a sociopath and she dared to ask for something he thought was insulting. Simple as that.

Tizzz After thinking about that, I think this is what happened. He accidentally kills Maggie. So he wanted so bad to hide it. But he knew that Mod going to tell Hal who's her real mother. Then it's obvious that Hal will be going to find who's her father and what happens to her mother. So, the truth can expose. Because of that Esra killed Mod. He was okay as long as Hal thought Mod is her mother. But when she said she's not, Esra worried that someone will be looking for Mod. And he didn't want Hal to find out what happened to her actual mother. So he wanted to kill her too.

Meg One of her letters says something like "I told him and it was worse than I could have imagined.” Which tells us both that it was really bad and that she already at least partly expected it to be bad. She was probably just inconvenient to him at the time. He wasn't ready to have his life disrupted, maybe to lose status in his mother's eyes, maybe to have a big expense. If he'd been helpful the girls might not have needed to run away.

message 10: by Patsy (new)

Patsy That's what had me scratching my head, too. What was the big deal about his fathering an out-of-wedlock baby? Unless he thought his mother would cut him out of the will?

message 11: by Tamro (new)

Tamro He didn't 'become' a sociopath. He always was one. And once Maggie insulted him by daring to challenge him he killed her. Everything else was cover-up for that crime.
