idk but didn't nezha and rin just become friends tho? there is something subtle going on between rin and altan too but it wasn't rlly the focus of the story? it was hardly romance tbh just bc nezha and altan are boys and rin is a girl. and honestly the thing that the mc feels for altan is more of a fascination than romantic
To some extent I think it would be strange if there was absolutely no hint of romance, seeing as the MC lives out her adolescence in the book. Not giving her even the slightest hint of romance would mean she's asexual, and then I'd want that to be explored or at least lampshaded.
The 'romantic' hints don't take over the MC's life or the story. MC has a close platonic friendship with one boy and seems to have some potentially romantic/admiring thoughts towards two other boys she knows well.
It was about right for me.
I wouldn't necessarily classify what happens as romance to be honest. MC might have some more romantic feelings for some characters, but it in no way drives the story and is likely not much longer than a page total. I actually really enjoyed her deep platonic relationships with the men in her life, it showed that their value to each other was not plainly due to potential romantic relationships.
Regardless of the romance part (though I do agree with the author that there wasn't really any romance), I shudder to think of this book as "young adult" given some of the events that happened in this book.
