Jo I agree with you, Kathy. I hadn't thought about the idea that the other brothers called Michael the murderer because they suspected that he ended Penny's suffering, and Clay found it easier to extend the olive branch because he knew Michael didn't do it.

Alan Mills He was called the murderer because he killed the family, not Penny, and did so by walking out after Penny died.

Judith Riseley Yep, I'm with you. The other clue was the police taking the car away.

Theresa Yes this was my understanding too. Spot on. Doesn’t make sense otherwise. This is why Clay felt a part of his fathers leaving them too: he knew what other brothers did not. And why clay “had” to go help his dad with the bridge etc.

Theresa Re Alan’s point I think that’s was a double meaning of the word Murderer by clever Zusak.
