I don't think you are supposed to like the main character. By the end he doesn't much like himself; but that's the point of the book, I think. The book does start slowly, but if you are patient it really takes off after the triggering event.
Yeah. It did improve toward the end, but I was still disappointed in the book. It was well written, of course, but I forgot it completely as soon as I finished it. I didn't actually like anyone in the book, except the uncle. But, Ms. French being as fabulous as she is, I will still be looking for her next book.
