I was surprised too that she was still so confused and didn't have a true picture of how neglectful and crazy her parents were. Yet half of her siblings went on to have 5-7 kids and bring them up the same way. I believe two others got away and educated like Tara. I guess deep down she loved them, but the violence they put their kids through was so bad, the kids should have been taken away from those parents. But many ID families apparently live that way.
I was in my forties before I confronted my mother on her physical and verbal abuse. And I did it by writing some short stories, which were not even published. But I gave them to her to read. And I asked her to please write why she had acted, during the times I wrote about, what was her side of the situation. This is what I wanted to know. She told me in writing: “You always had an active imagination Judy. I don’t know where you have gotten any of these ideas. Just because you had to stay with relatives for while when you were young, now, after all these years you are questioning my judgement.” Etc. And then my mother continued to write, in the same letter, that she never wanted to see me again. That she forbid me to ever write about her again. Etc.
This stuff does happen. And many cannot speak up. Good for Tara to find her voice so young.
At one point, Tara comes home from college, having learned the fuller story of Ruby Ridge, and screams at her father for the narrative he brought the children up on and the effect on their lives, adding that he ignored the monsters in his own house. Her parents knew what was going on, and she knew they knew even though they said she made it up. Maybe she thought there was no point in going further. I'm amazed she was able to separate and create her own identity.
