Picasso Have you ever tried reading any mangas? If not, and you ever feel like it, you should definitely try "Death Note", which is some real good writing by Tsugumi Ohba and kinda "shortish" for serialized manga (13 volumes).

Mark Lawrence I saw the Death Note movie, which I thought was OK, though fans of the original story seem outraged about it.

Philipp T. I think ghost in the shell (anime and tv-series, not the movie) and cowboy beebob are great entry points to anime. Couldn't get into many anime since characters, fights and everything felt so over the top, it was hard to connect... But those somehow worked for me.
