About not redeeming Stephen. Thank you so much for checking in! I got carried away writing the question and wrote too much.
Thanks for clarifying! Stephen is the antihero of the novel, so I didn't feel the need to make his character redeemable. Ultimately (and unfortunately) there are people like him in the world who are just not good people, and his character is an example of that. Perhaps he'd have redeemable qualities from another character's POV, but the central relationship in the book is between him and Lucy, and in that relationship, he doesn't.
