Do you think she tried to sabatoge the wedding b/c she knew that he had been abusive to Kate and therefore was in a way trying to save Vanessa. She just didn't go as far as Venessa did to save Emma. Maybe....
I assumed that Maureen was in love with Richard as well. In my perspective, she wasn't trying to save Vanessa because she emphasized not being able to detect any remorse from Maureen when she was brutally abused by Richard in the end. Vanessa also emphasized it clicked for her why Maureen never married or had children. It seemed that the inappropriate nature of their relationship as well as their trauma bond was hinted at throughout the entire novel.
