Amogh If Charlie himself were reading these letters sometime in the future, that line will discourage him from thinking about Sam. He did love Sam a lot; she was his first crush and love. This will have a unique place in everyone's heart. Obviously, Sam and Patrick have now gone away to college, and like Charlie said, he wouldn't have time to write new letters because he was trying to participate. We can assume over time that there would not be as much contact between them as they had in this novel.

There could be a reason he switched names.

Vidhi Agrawal I don't think it is Charlie himself that he was writing the letters too. There are two reasons for this. At one place, he writes "That since, you are older than me.." and another place he describes how writing a letter to someone was better than a personal diary. He also tells in the end how he had heard about that person.

Y. L I would second Vidhi - he didn't have the opportunity to sleep with Sam until further on in the book, whereas he mentioned "not sleeping with that person" in his very first letter.
