If this was the author's actual intention for how the ending should be interpreted, it is piss-poor storytelling. It's also not logical, given the events in the story. I'm not disagreeing with you - I have the feeling the author wanted there to be this kind of interpretation, but the story itself fails to actually give us grist for this mill.
