I've read three books by him now, (1984, Animal Farm and Keep The Aspidistra Flying) and I found all of them dull, clumsy, lacklustre and sledge-hammer-unsubtle. I think he is a very much overrated author, possibly because his ideas are interesting. But an interesting idea alone does not make for a good novel.
I don't know I think he just appeals a lot to a large group of people
