Gerry I am not musical but profoundly jealous of those who are. There is something about Carter that I always thought was musical and I am always intrigued by authors who list what they were listening to when they wrote a particular book. Those two things together sparked the question. Your reference to R.E.M. presupposes there is such a thing as too much R.E.M. which is not a state I recognise.

Glen Gold You are correct -- Carter is musical, or at least I had some rhythms in there that I hoped evoked some classical themes. I went to an auction of the Great Raymond's personal effects and his 1920s show's sheet music was in there, with hand notations about what composers to, uh, sample when performing the cues.

I highly appreciate your feeling about R.E.M. Let us see if you have the same opinion after reading the new book. It's not so much the sheer amount as the intensity.
