Claire was definitely dead; it states that Madeline was on trial for a double murder -- David and Claire. If Claire had not died it would have only stated that Madeline was on trial for murder (singular)
I think it’s wrong to say Claire’s parents were worthless. As this book clearly illustrates there are many many sides to a story. Perhaps Claire’s parents know she is a sociopath, perhaps she showed signs in early childhood we are not aware of. The way she’s not allowed to have scissors or matches, show they may have known what they were dealing with especially after she pushed her pregnant mother down the stairs. She probably knew full well why she was fat and didn’t want to share her parents with another child. They were probably terrified of her not worthless or hateful. We only know from Claire’s twisted diaries that they were hateful.
I feel that the author purposely made it confusing so that there would be a buzz about her book. Take out the ambiguous and misleading before chapters, the fact that there was no body found for Edward and the bracelet at the end and there would be nothing to talk about.
I still don't understand the difference between Claire, Amber, Taylor, Taylor/Amber?? So confusing!! Too much back and forth...
Sallie, I suggest listening to the audio book. The reader did quite a splendid job and it's much easier to follow.
Thank you for that information. I re-read several chapters and I think I now understand who everyone is! I still liked the book, just a little confused!!
