At the end, Judy asks May to talk to her about Briny and Queenie again, so apparently Judy had been told stories about her parents many times before.
Ahhh!! So the woman who was having the baby at the beginning of the book ended up being Judy's mother ... which explains the Stafford family being involved in the adoption underground ...
