This is definitely a frustrating element of a lot of books out. However, though this book doesn't have any LGBTQ characters but nonetheless, it is an excellent book with great plot development and great characters. If you're looking for speculative fiction that has more representation of LGBTQ characters, try Zoraida Cordova's "Labyrinth Lost" or "The Bone Witch" by Rin Chupeco. You might enjoy those. :) Happy reading!
"so heteronormative it hurts" is accurate... I'm pretty sure I physically cringed at "you look magnificent, every boy here will want a dance with you!"
As Cinemasins would say, "The power of ladyboners is stronger". I really liked this book but felt that Zelie and Inan's romance was 1) cringeworthy and made her act ridiculously out of character 2) felt mandated by the upublisher rather than organically created by Adeyemi's story and 3) sunk my Zelie/Amari ship.
oh thank god I thought I was the only one. I really enjoyed the whole book up till this point - even enjoying a bit of the ship-tease moments that were kind of obvious but still alright because why not - but then I got to the point where the romance was just getting Shoved in the midst of the plot and I just....this just got a whole lot more draining to read even though EVERYTHING ELSE (aka plot) still has me wanting more. I'm all for m/f romance but let's just say you know when it's a good one and when it's not. And I'm getting major "it's not" feelings from this heteronormativity. It REALLY doesn't help that of the 4 primary characters we're given, 2 male and 2 female, of COURSE they're getting paired with each other of the opposite sex.
This book isn’t that much LGBTQ as the next book. The next book (Children of Virtue and Vengeance) has a lesbian couple in it. These books are honestly great either way.
