I can see how it might read that way. I meant it in a more lighthearted way as in, don't worry about it. I admit that when it comes to reading levels as a librarian I can be militant about ignoring them. I just want kids to read, anything and everything regardless of levels. I'm glad we agree on that. Thank you for the insight.

Reading levels (particularly "letter" levels) as specified by Jude Sharp, have nothing to do with content or appropriatness. They are based solely on decoding and understanding. Fountas and Pinnell the authors of the "Letter" leveling system state unequivocally that children should never choose books based on levels. They also believe that neither children nor their parents should be aware of a child's level.
So I stand by my answer, "A child should read whatever interests him." I will add the caveat that a parent should not only know what a child is reading but also read along so they could have discussions about the reading.
