I love this answer, thank you! It really resonates with my own indignant feelings about what Oliver did... Of course there would have been difficulties, but I agree that, if he really wanted to, he could have made it work with Elio.
I hope in the sequel Oliver finally find his courage and giv their relationship a HEA.
You're forgetting something really important: Oliver is a orthodox jewish. Jews get pressure from their parents to get marry by the age of 25 for a man. For ladies, 21/22
It's not that he didn't love him and that's they have different cultures and Oliver was raised to get marry and have kids. He was scared. He knew it was the wrong way what he was doing with Elio His heart belongs to Elio but his mindset belongs to his family.
