I was also confused by that dialogue--did Henry tell Julian about the murder or didn't he? If he did and Julian approved, that makes him as much of a monster as Henry. And that murder also confuses me. Henry claims it was accidental, yet we learn later how mutilated the farmer's body was, something that could not have been accidental. Thanks for addressing this here and giving me more to think about.

I think Julian was a coward. He wanted his students to idolize him, but freaked out when they took what he said literally.
