Exactly my take on the characters, as well.
I was also thinking along these same lines, too, but the way the author wrote the scene of the visit from the Lt. Detective, I wasn't sure I was right.
The problem that I have with the "Split Personality" theory is that typically, people with Multiple Personality Syndrome are described as having no memory of what they were doing during the time that their Other Personality has taken over. Rose and Odalie seemed to be frequently together, and Rose doesn't describe any memory lapses.
Agreed! I just finished this book and was thinking split personality too but I've never read any story where the person is aware of the "other" personality, although the "other personality" IS aware of the person.
And near the end when the Lt Detective visits Rose in the mental institute he says "She (Odalie) asked me to give you something," exactly when did "she" ask him to do this? Rose is taken into custody after Teddy's death so where could the Odalie personality emerge and have time to give the brooch to Frank? Unless this entire story is only a fantasy taking place in her (Genevra"s) head the whole time.
