I hadn't considered Sam's connection between the Old Gods and the New, but I like the idea of that negotiation, that middle ground, it's something that I hadn't considered. Not too sure if she is supposed to be a goddess, though, but I do agree that she is supposed to counteract/be in opposition to Laura. Thanks for your thoughts!
I think Sam better symbolizes some sort of hope of cultural assimilation, someone who bridges the old and the new so well that it's un-self-conscious. She's a bit of a stand-in to represent the future. It all goes back to her contradictions speech.
She has a bit of the Desire about her, which the doubles up with the idea of Laura as Despair. Not that she is the character in the same way as the girl in SF is definitely Delirium, but there are similarities enough. Joseph Campbell would be able to suss it out, but I am left with impression and intuition, which are equal to nothing
