The Ranger's Apprentice Series by John Flanagan
I loved Gregor the Overlander Series by Suzanne Collins. It's a great read and there is no bad language or sexual situations.
"The Neverending Story," and "Momo" by Michael Ende, and The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. Commonsensemedia.org often has reviews for popular novels that indicate degree of language, sex, drinking, etc., maybe check that out.
Yes to all these suggestions as well! Also I loved Ender's Game and The Hitchhiker's Guide at that age, and my 13yo LOVES Hitchhiker's!
The School for Good and Evil is a good book, but I dunno if he'll find it interesting. The Chronicles of Narnia is also a good series.
Lloyd Alexander is great, too. Philip Pullman, both his His Dark Materials and his earlier Sally Lockhart mysteries. Terry Brooks' Magic Kingdom For Sale. The Queens of Renthia by Sarah Beth Durst . . . there's stuff!
Definitely Ranger's Apprentice. Also, The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen, The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart, and lots of books by Margaret Peterson Haddix.
Theft of Swords by Michael Sullivan is similar to Ranger Apprentice, British author Michelle Paver's Wolf Brother series, Sea of Trolls series by Nancy Farmer (these last two might be a tad young for 16, but the writing is really good, so maybe not)
One way to keep finding good books is to use book-rating sites that tell parents whether there's swearing and stuff so they don't have to take the time theirselves! I usually use http://www.compassbookratings.com/ and http://x-rayreads.com/
My son read Princess of the Midnight Ball when he was 14 and enjoyed it. We love the strong male character. It may have helped that my son learned to knit when he was 8. ^_^ We recommend ND Wilson, Bryan Davis, and Andrew Peterson in addition to many of the ones recommended. I'm also adding some new ones to my "to read" list from this comment thread.
