They are big, ugly and hairy but harmless. They do not make webs but rather stalk their prey (hence the huntsman name). They are definitely not one of our dangerous spiders and you are more likely to die of fright if they run across your face in the middle of the night than as a result of being bitten.
Weirdly, coming inside usually means it's about to rain. I was surprised to see it in this droughty novel.

It's not "poisonous" - it's pretty harmless, actually.
