I've never read this book, but I've noticed fans are torn between the beauty of the prose and the uncomfortable subject. The prose must really be that good!
I certainly don't agree that at 16 one knows more about sexual relationships than most- that's ridiculous. The book is a psychological story, and doesn't glorify, you are correct. Many 16 year olds are not mature enough to appreciate the novel, obviously you are. Even many adults can't see past the pedophilia to appreciate Nabokov's beautiful prose as he tells the story of Humbert Humbert and Lolita. Please see my review of this book, and I do understand why some 16 year olds would like to read this book without a parent's knowledge, I was one once!
But I couldn't see how any 16 year old into literature enough to care to read it would need guidance. It has controversial topics (though not glorified, as mentioned) and a little hard prose. No guidance really needed for anyone into literature enough to bother reading.
I was 16 when I read this, too, and I wasn't even grossed out or thought "I shouldn't be reading this" at any point.
