Leah Stein I definitely agree with this approach, and like that it was undefined. Also, I think for the time that it was written, it may very well be impossible for a writer like Hesse to write a homoerotic novel. btw that's how I connected Sinclair's falling in love with Damien's mother - it is the closest to loving Damien openly that he could get. (the two get compared quite frequently by Sinclair)
I think that infatuation, admiration, sexual attraction, love, and a deep soulmate type of connection can get confused and their relationship, in my eyes, is a mixture of some of the above.
