Josephine Briggs There are no jobs in a southern Ireland town. There are so many jobs of different kinds. There is so much going on in America. Rose was competent, outgoing, athletic, ambitious. She probably felt Eilis would do well by going to America, this is the place for her. Rose felt she must stay with her mother, she is the oldest in the family, the way things are done in Europe, especially for the oldest daughter.

Josephine Briggs Tony really loved Eilis. Jim, before Eilis moved to America and came back to be with her mother, he treated her very rudely. Then, he felt she had changed because of becoming much like an America, ambitious, going on to school. Still she had right to be angry with him because of the way he treated her when he thought she had nothing. Another is when Rose asked her employer to interview her younger sister, he said no. When she helped with his payroll he was interested in hiring her. As for her former employer, Miss Kelley, who treated her badly, she bragged on how much her cousin liked Eilis. I don't blame her for returning to America.
