Exactly, there are some facts, and based on them, Follett can do anything about it, as far as it is coherent and credible. That's the beauty of historical fiction. Now, the possitive thing is that it's up to you if you are interested enough to look up for the facts and documentation. If not, it's your bad, because you'll probably miss some interesting things Follett did.
