Steven Allen Many of the situations Nathan finds himself in would have been better served with a grenade. Do not confuse explosive rounds with grenades - they are not the same critter at all. Explosive rounds waste a lot of their energy in the target, whereas a grenade the whole room is the target and eveyone suffers equally. Either that or Nathan is not deploying his weapon in the most effective manner. As a retired US Army Ranger, any time the enemy was stupid enough to bunch up, such as standing underneath a drop tube, instead of trying to bounce rounds off the sides, we would drop grenades. Nathan could have used grenades, claymore mines, and satchel charges - all things his primative backwards-thinking mind should have thought of. Any kid of this day and age who play these damn war video games have a decent idea of what the average Infantry grunt carries.

Marc Stevens Point taken and understood sir. The new smart grenade comment was more than a hint (spoiler) Since I am a civilian and so is the protagonist we tend to make do with the tools we have or find. Thank you for your insight and if you come up with some more ideas a novice writer like me can use please drop me a line. Thank you for your service!

Steven Allen I don't want to steal your surprises in the next book, but thank you. Lethality of explosive rounds is limited by payload capacity. A few attempts have designed explosive rounds for crew served weapons, but the effectiveness of the round was not worth neither the cost nor effective enough to justify its inclusion in the arsenal. The MK19 40 mm grenade launcher is a favorite weapon for dealing with massed enemies. In SciFi you can fudge around with the effectiveness of smaller rounds due to wondrous alien tech. Outside of Old West fiction your MC using a 10 ga is unique. I tried to find another author that used a 10 ga in SciFi and have yet to come up with one. I work as a freelance editor (graduated from UW go Huskies!) specializing in military genres. Not sure if you have have an editor, but I would have loved seeing your first novel's manuscript.

Marc Stevens Steven, when I wrote First of my Kind it was a pipe dream to publish it. I never thought anything would have ever come of it. The book was not edited other than the writing program (worthless) I purchased and spell check. I am a building contractor and knew nothing about writing other than I wanted to try. I just hired an editor to fix all my mistakes in FomK and she will have For the Good of All as soon as I finish the rough draft. The weapons in my book are based on shotguns I have owned. The 10 gauge auto is an Ithaca goose gun and the bullpup is a KelTec KSG and so on. It is easier to write about things I actually know about. (Grenades not so much) Thank you for your input.

Steven Allen You are welcome. I am glad that you have found an editor. Are you going to rerelease FomK? One thing I hope that you editor fixes is the page-filling paragraphs. I too love the 10 ga have two Ithacas and one Remington auto 10 ga none of which are made anymore. I also have my great grandfather's side by side Greener 8 ga. Talk about a beast - it kills on one end and maims on the other. Good luck and I hope to see the new book soon.
