Zoe Porphyrogenita I can thank Wace for writing that Alan caused the English "great damage" at Hastings, Stephen Morillo for his study of the battle in which he deduced that the English were winning until Leofwine and Gyrth were slain, Domesday Book for pointing the finger at Alan and Lord William de Braose, the designers and embroiderers of the Bayeux Tapestry for helpfully depicting many scenes in detail, and the many people who conserved these records for us.
