I am reminded of Simon's elephant story in Memory. That was a nice inclusion, too.
I always laugh at stories like that because I've encountered so many people who find them unrealistically fantastic. They obviously have not met or known many of the people I have. Fafa and Jokol remain amongst my favorites both for being surprising and for not being exactly what they appear to be at first glance. It's the details like this that make me love these stories.
Wonder if gifted polar bears were a result of some Northern royal lady's little fuzzy white pet grown up and her harried menfolk getting it out of the house in a -- heh -- diplomatic way.
