No one actually knows if the twin survived. It said this in the book.
Actually, we do know that he survived - Trent Sr. found him. Shad Arthur Foss - the information was in the envelope that he had for Grandma Judy. The sad irony is that he'd finally found a record, but it was a dead end, and by the time he found it, Judy's mind had started to go and she'd forgotten all about the entire situation.
