Charla Gatz Johnston Jules thinks Lena looks like and therefore is the daughter of Robbie Cannon, Nel's boyfriend when she was 17 and the predator who raped Jules.

Gretchen Schaeffer Almeida Ok. Thanks! I thought that at one point in the book, and then for some reason I thought Jules had changed her mind after confronting Robbie.

Charla Gatz Johnston I was hoping Jules would find a secret letter written by Nel or some sort of proof that Lena’s father was somebody else!
At some point, I recall Jules feeling distressed while remembering a voicemail from Nel in which Nel said she was going to talk to an old friend. Jules felt bad she hadn’t been there for Nel because then she wouldn’t have turned to the friend, whom one would assume was Robbie, leading to another assumption: that that’s when Lena was conceived.
Do you remember anything after the following passage where Lena has come back downstairs after showering (following her kidnapping by Mark Henderson) and Jules has fed her the spaghetti Bolognese she asked for?
*~*
Afterwards, when she smiled and said thank you, I shivered, because now that I have seen it, I can’t unsee it. She has her father’s smile.
(What else, I wondered, does she have of his?)
“What’s wrong?” Lena asked suddenly. “You’re staring at me.”
“I’m sorry,” I said, my face reddening. “I’m just . . . I’m glad you’re home. I’m glad you’re safe.”
*~*
I went back and looked for further references to Lena’s paternity and the only thing I found was shortly after the above, where Lena and Jules lie in Nel’s bed together and Jules thinks Lena looks exactly like Nel.

Charla Gatz Johnston You're very welcome! I may not be right--delusions shift like fog in this story!
