I am well aware of the effect it was supposed to have and I agree that Collins was successful in creating it. I just don't see how Prim's death was in any way Gale's fault. Yes, he invented the bombs, but it's not his fault that SHE died. It is his fault that people died, but they wouldn't have won the war if no one had died. But there was absolutely NO way he copuld've foreseen that she would die. Some of their own soldiers, sure, stuff like that happens, but not someone like Prim who had no business being there in the first place. I even see why Gale blamed himself. I mean, I'd probably do that, too, if I were in this situation. But it's not understandable that Katniss blames him. It was not his fault and especially she should see that.
That's the reaction I usually get when I say that I don't like her. Let me just clarify that I certainly do not hate her and that I understand why so many people like her. I just think that she is cute, innocent, perfect and boring. What I like in a character is what makes them human. I like flaws, secrets, cunning, interesting minds... Prim had none of that. I mean, she had a certain role to play in the series and she was well-suited for that, but the way I see it, that's about it.

Collins wanted to show how dangerous and unsafe the world was by giving dramatic fates to reader favorites. The only two people Katniss truly loved in the beginning of THG were Gale and Prim, although she might not have realized that she loved Gale at the time. Since Collins already killed Prim, she wanted to burn the other connection to Katniss's less stressful past--Gale. However, Gale couldn't die in battle because he was only separated from Katniss once. Any other time, Katniss would've died with him. I assume that Collins wanted to give readers a false sense of security and then yank it from them to show off the cruelty and injustice of reality...
So although Katniss and Gale's relationship was upsetting and undesirable, it was necessary (in my opinion) to show Katniss the difference between the past and the present. Gale was the past, and Peeta and their children are the future
And no, I don't hate Gale. I really loved him and thought they were perfect fro each other. I almost cried, which is super rare because I've only ever cried while reading 3 books. Ever. (Out of My Mind, Allegiant, Mockingjay)
