Agree.
that was what I was thinking when I read the last section of the book! It is really similar to the last part of 1984, given that both protagonists were being "reeducated" and even brainwashed through interrogation and torture. I wonder if the author did it purposefully to refer to 1984--in a way, the communist regime under which the protagonist was interrogated was similar to the authoritative regime in 1984. So I wonder if the author of the Sympathizer did it on purpose to make that connect. Or it could be a complete coincidence. Either way, I think it's extremely interesting, and the ending's very compelling.
