In Book 3 Eleanor said to Nick "The things your father and I had to do" when talking about why he hadn't had any children yet. I just figured it was harder than they expected on top of the pressure from Su Yi.
China only allowed the birth of one child, starting in 1979. Their first child was a son, so their family was complete. Had they had a daughter first, they would of been "allowed" to try for a son. Remember in the 1st book, how Rachel was going to be maimed by her "grandparents"?
I've got an impression that Phillip is homosexual. That would explain a lot about his relationships with his wife and his mother.
