Dan Their "evil" was in the fact that they were getting it on, not with the children, but with each other. This broke serious societal class taboos, not to mention the late Victorian era taboo on pre-marital, heck non-marital, sex. I must admit I do wonder about Miles calling the governess "dear" so often. Their relationship is clearly too intimate and inappropriate. I just think that it being a sexual relationship is further than any Victorian mind, even Henry James's, could possibly go, but I could be mistaken.
