Betsy I agree that Benji and Amat are the pros. We are told early on that the other two don't have the talent. I think Bobo gets his wish and becomes the husband and father he sees in his own dad. Sadly, I think Z loses his fight with depression and loneliness. I was surprised that he lived through the main events of the book--we were set up to believe he broke into the school to commit suicide, when he had gone to scrub Maya's locker.

Dioscita I think that grave belongs to Benji's father; it's a place David has left things for Benji in the past. I agree with Betsy's guesses here, and think the same way she did.

Lisa Nelson when I read the part about seeing Benji's face on TV, I wondered if it was he the news because he had died

message 4: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Bunnell unless he was already famous, the don't usually televise stories about someone's death. NHL players are on tv every game though. Play on, Benji!

Sandi Alex He is leading us to think it's Zacharias. Fairly certain it won't be Benji or Amat. We'll see if Book Two has a twist.

message 6: by Jedge (new)

Jedge Sandi Alex, is there a book two? I haven't heard anything about it. The ending is what made me dislike the book. The author built up the characters for us yet we don't find out what actually happens? I'm so disappointed.
I agreee with the above commenter that the grave was Benji's father's not his gravestone. I remember David saying something like he always expects Benji to walk back into the rink to play again.

Sandi Alex My understanding is that this will be a trilogy, so we should learn a lot more about these folks in the future.

Jake Parrish Us Against You tells us

message 9: by Betsy (new)

Betsy I just finished Us against you.
I think Backman wishes he had not said that one of the four we already knew would be dead. At the end of the second book, he leaves it fairly open that three will have long lives and that the fourth is too central and beloved to kill off.

message 10: by Jake (new)

Jake Parrish So you know which one died, right?

message 11: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Probably, but I am in denial.
“Playing professionally” could refer to Bobo (the dad) plus two hockey players, or Bobo plus hockey player plus gamer.

message 12: by Jake (new)

Jake Parrish Yeah. I interpreted it the second way. Bobo (dad) plus pro hockey player and pro gamer, and...

message 13: by Jake (new)

Jake Parrish Never considered your first thought. I hope that is the correct one bc losing fav character sucks

message 14: by Betsy (new)

Betsy I think that our favorite character is also the author’s. He will probably figure out a way to write his way out of it.
Totally agree with you!

message 15: by Jake (new)

Jake Parrish Is it supposed to be a trilogy? I can't find anything stating so. Or is it just speculated?

message 16: by Betsy (new)

Betsy I heard that this was. Maybe a reviewer said or speculated this?

message 17: by Jake (new)

Jake Parrish Oh okay. Well if there isn't, it's pretty clear who died

message 18: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Backman said in an interview it was a trilogy, and if so it will be interesting to see how he writes his way out or if he does.
