Maybe not because there was an earlier scene of hockey puck at cemetery.
David often told Benji that he was the "bravest bastard I know," plus David also told the story of how his father's watch was a special secret reward for a week about once a year to only Kevin & Benji.
I don't think it can be Benji personally since neithr zach or bobo have the skill to play professionally. I think that David left his puck and watch in present day (which he had done earlier in the book too since he knows Benji visits there to see his dad) as a way to apologize for being a failure in his homophobia.
I also assumed that Benji had to be the one who died because of the scene with David at the cemetery. Maybe Bobo became better at skating? I was very frustrated at the end of the book that more details weren't given. I hope there is a follow up book.
In part two of the Beartown trilogy there will be a violent car crash, and someone will die. We will know who it is in August. Have patience. I don't think it's Benji.
I was positive it was Benji-but maybe he was misleading us- like he did at the beginning when you think one teen murdered another with a shotgun.
Pretty sure it's not Benji-and author was so cryptic on purpose- and I followed along without wondering about it.
I agree that it's Benji because of this passage, too. But HOW does he die? I thought I missed something but maybe it's left out for the sequels?
I think author wants you to think it's Benji because of grave thing...but coach knew Benji went to visit his father's grave regularly, and he could have put watch on that grave. More importantly, the same way author wanted you to think one teen killed another in the beginning -when he said teen pulled trigger. Teen did pull trigger- but no one died. Think author wants reader to jump to conclusion it was Benji because of grave thing. Whew -The End : ))
If benji isn't dead then why would David essentially retire his jersey? i think my benji died and I don't want to read the rest if that's the case. I cried so hard
But that's because he retired from the game. Benji didnt. He still wanted to play. It also said David went on to coach very successful teams. I believe even professionals. Why would benji not reclaim his jersey at some point if he eventually moved to become a pro anyway? It seems like he knows benji is dead but still holds onto hope that it's a mistake.
David was able to accept benji was gay. Him being gone forever ( therefore him waiting for him forever) seems to be something he can't accept
He retired or stopped playing for them -right? I just don't think he's dead-think author is mis-leading us to think that .
No, jeter retired. I don't remember reading that David is transferring to hed... the book does mention that benji returns next season and they have a new a team
Zacaharia I don't think died. He was depressed because he was picked on but that stopped after bobo stuck up for him. The two even become friends when they form a new a team. Also, through out the book it also talks about how dedicated he was to hockey even missing the juniors final or semi finals to train. That along with the order the author mentions them and what happens in ten years time makes me think he's dead. But I want to be wrong bc without benji I'm over the series
Backman is brilliant at leading the reader to think one way and then pull the rug out from under us. The entire plot of Us Against You (Beartown #2) is full of misdirection and angst for the reader. At least some of the answer to the question posed here is very quietly inserted into the second book. I just love Fredrik Bachman's storytelling!
I suppose the second part of the trilogy is out in the US now. If it is not: I wonder if it goes back to ten years earlier and part 3 will be ten years later. As I was trying to figure out who lived and who died, I happened to do a search on "ten years" on my kindle and I noticed that the time period is a motif. Ten years before the time period of Beartown a lot of things happen. Ten years after, a few more things happen.
