The very distant "father" is the husband of Agatha's sister. If Agatha conceived Daniel with her fiance' who died, then spent time with her sister who passed the baby off as her own, before she died, then her husband would have no real connection with his "son." He went right to boarding school at 5 years old, when his "mother" died, and spent all his Christmases, and all other holidays with Agatha. Agatha's husband, John, was trying to find a position for Daniel after he graduated. John knew and understood, and helped keep the secret.
