Sir, while you may be correct, the assumptions you are making about this person is just plain ridiculous.
"It's always struck me as weird that people worry about their little tween or teen angels encountering some mild swearing or sex, at a level they inevitably encounter in school or from friends, but are OK with horrific violence (we're talking vivisection)." You are first assuming that this person is a parent picking a book out for a child. Second you are assuming that they are okay with violence but not swearing or sex. We have different experiences yes, however, I usually find that people are repulsed by by graphic violence. I don't understand why you cannot simply answer the question by providing a brief content advisory.
It always struck me as weird that people will try to make a problem when there is one and feel the need to get on their "holier than though" horse to tell a person why they are wrong to ask a question instead of just answering the inoffensive question.
Books and media people are exposed to most certainly do influence people's thinking. Don't downplay that effect. Even Hitler understood that you can use cartoons to change people's morals.
On a lesser scale, I've seen people in my own life being affected by the stories they consume.
