Stari If they were cousins, then why was Ruth previously engaged to Idgie's brother? That makes no sense.

Amber Torres Yeah, after reading some more that was just something Idgie said to get some information. Ruth wasn't engaged to Idgie's brother but was an ex-girlfriend. It's pretty subtle but Idgie and Ruth definitely were in a relationship. I found it somewhat interesting how the author never comes right out and says it, but it's definitely insinuated many times that they were a couple. Especially the conversation that transpires with the family after Idgie rescues Ruth from Frank.

Stari I think being subtle about that kind of highlights how that would've been received in that time period. It's an intimate story and viewpoint...they may have been secretive about it and that reflected in the narrative.
