I taught 8th grade language arts for years. I was the first teacher most of my students had who told them it was OK not to finish a book. I made the same argument. There are thousands of books in the world they would love. Why waste time on ones they don't?! So many of my kids said it totally changed the way they looked at reading.
Could not agree more!! If I don't like a book or can't get into it, I just stop reading it. I can't believe the number of harsh reviews I've seen from some readers...critics can be jerks!
