In fact, a read-aloud with 3rd graders would be the perfect context to discuss why the bully character's specific choice of words (and his father's passive-aggressive criticisms of EVERYONE) are so insidious - or in 3rd graders' vocabulary, so hurtful and damaging.
I agree completely. I am hesitant to read the chapters as is. The language used by the bully is not current to middle schoolers. Students have their own rhetoric and introducing something inappropriate is not in my comfort zone. I will modify the language in some places while having discussion in others.
