One of the toddlers almost drowns. Many of the characters in this book blame themselves which is why they're "truly madly guilty". The parents keep beating themselves up for not watching her every single minute: for having fun. It was their good friends who resuscitate the little one. The neighbor whose fountain it was destroys the fountain.. etc
Also, it is revealed at the end that Holly pushed her sister Ruby into the fountain. The cranky neighbor Harry saw it happening from his window and banged on the window to warn Erica. Erica (drunk & affected by her medication) didn't realize that it was Ruby floating in the fountain and let time slip by before actually running to help. In the meantime, Harry had tried to run down to help, slipped, hit his head and died. Ruby ended up being fine. Everyone felt guilty, but the worst thing was that Holly finally revealed to Oliver and the grandma, Pam that she had pushed Ruby into the fountain (for touching her purse with her rock collection) and they let Holly think it wasn't her fault and gave her no consequences for nearly killing her baby sister. Ugh!!!
Yeah, the author really let the ending slip...no consequences or Holly, everything kind of just floats by...I can't believe I read whole book!! The teasing of the barbecue and what happens got me...but it was something bad, but not something truly engaging. I'm sorry this bad thing happened, but it wasn't enough to almost break up a marriage and focus the whole story around it. Moriarty should have built up the conflict more and not made Ruby so easily better and conscious.
