Lisa Mcallister funny you used the phrase, "story isn't linear" because I thought of it as a loop. I re-read the beginning when I got to the end, and I think it could have started any where. While this wasn't my favorite in the series, Tana Hoban is still queen of analogies. I could read her writing all day long. There was one scene with the girls sitting outside in the beginning of the book, and she (Hoban) has a knack for describing little nuances and feelings. She was able to do the same with Stephen at times, when he was remembering his own youth.

Louise Annetta I agree that a mystery novel needs to be somewhat compelling. I struggled to read it, and did so mainly because i loved the first three books and was hoping for a redeeming ending.
