I agree with you. He had people who loved and cared about him but he was such a lonely soul always.
That's what I thought too. He didn't use the shotgun because that would have been too messy but if he knew, to the penny, the amount of money in his account he had looked at it just the day before.
When he mentions the money, he says that there is an account with XXX dollars in it "from Sonja's dad" so my take was that this was a separate account that they never chose to touch, hence why he knew the exact amount. Not that this is definitive on the question of suicide, but I don't think this means he checked the account and updated the letter the same day he died.
But I think it fits Ove's personality that he knew the balance of his bank account down to the last Kroner. That's Ove. I suspect he knew the precise balance in his account every day of his life. I don't think that's necessarily a sign that he committed suicide.
I agree with Lauren and Jeffrey. I think it is an account that wasn't used much and Ove was fastidious. He would know how much was in the account and update accordingly.
I do not agree with the suicide theory.
1. The heart condition feels like the foreshadowing for his death.
2. The reason he know about the exact amount of money in the account mensioned is probably because it is a separate account. The wording was, loosly translatetd from the swedis edition, "The is an account with 11 563 013 kronor and 67 öre. From Sonja's father". If it was'nt a separate account it would probably have said " in MY account" and not "there is AN account".
3. In the end of the book, he as received a new purpose. Not only the new relations with the adults, but foremost, Parvaneh's girls had chosen him as a grandfather. He would not commit suicide, because I don't believe he would leave the girls and having them loose thier grandfather.
4. Who would stop the cars from driving in the neighborhood? :)
I thought it was his time was near. I thought the money in account was the Sonjas Dads money and hence he never used or intended to use it. Hence the precise amount.
It makes sense - The precise amount in his bank account and the fact he had left the envelope for Pravanah made it seem that way- I assume he didn't just leave it there "in case". I'm so sad to think he did take his own life but I am glad that when he went, he went knowing there were people who would love and miss him.
