I think there are a lot of similarities to Japanese food culture. I've lived in Japan the last 11 years, the last 3 as vegetarian, and I'm nearly afraid to tell people because the reaction is so negative (especially for a man)-- they strongly believe that "meat makes you strong" and you "absolutely must eat meat to be healthy". So bizarre considering Japan didn't even eat red meat until the 1880s. It's just that aspect of masculinity that they can't get past.
