I think this happens nearly everywhere outside the big cities and educated crowds. :) Even in the countries where there is a vegetarian population, it is quite common to hear questions like "aren't you afraid you'll get sick because of your diet?"
Also a northern Californian, pescatarian for 29 years. My Mom initially thought I'd starve, and others were baffled. Even though it's become a more prevalent lifestyle choice, I still get funny comments, like a lady who tried to convince me that a rottiserie chicken wasn't meat.
ikr! You'd think CA would be a place where people wouldn't feel the need to impose their misguided dietary information upon others, but nope!
I've been a vegetarian in Northern California for nearly 50 years. It was worse when I started, but these days people seem to take my vegetarianism in stride... except the restaurants, which are still, even now, sometimes way too centered on meat. If you want vegetarian food, you often have only one option... possibly just a salad!
