Nicola Phillips It deals with some really complex issues (race, white supremicism, love, murder, sexual abuse) and so even though it is not super graphic, it would be wasted on anyone younger that 16 or 17.

Robin I think it should be required reading for 5th/6th graders. Yes, the issues are complex, but they are things that really do happen to kids this age. While the responsible adults think they're hiding such horrors from them, their reality may be these things actually happening to them. This book paves the way to knowing you're not alone. That you have to tell someone. And that's just the molestation/rape. The racial topics should be being taught way earlier that 5/6 grade. It's seriously complacent and naive to paint a pretty racial picture in the US. Racism is alive and well and needs to be discussed early and often.
