Thanks for your answer (and apologies for the delay!). It's a perspective I never would have considered, and likely exposes my naivete, since honestly I expect characters to be, not necessarily virtuous or one-dimensional, but predictable! It never occurred to me to have sympathy for Serena Joy, but of course she deserves it as well.
You have given me something to think about, and perhaps I'll need to read the book again with this perspective at top-of-mind!
