Then you must read On Chesil Beach. This book would slip down to second place.
I could almost have written your review word for word, except for the part about the red room. I just assumed Jack wanted to hide any evidence of bloodshed he intended for Grace/Millie. I read most of the book and put it down, not sure if I would ever finish it. I picked it back up, not realizing I was close to the ending. If you want to call it that. Implausible plot, unbelievable characters. I wanted to throw the book across the room, but alas, I was reading it on my iPad.
